Just before Christmas I started realizing that the Dutch Documentation Project was finishing up the translation of the (hugeee) handbook. That realisation made me translate tiny pieces of the PPP and SLIP chapter while away in Belgium (where possible without doing harm to the “away week” ). After that I continued the final bits of the translation and made some improvements for the english version as well.

I finished up the translation just before new year, Wouter Reckman, a new volunteer that helps, was translating filesystems, which got imported yesterday. With those last two achievements, we managed to entirely translate the handbook to the Dutch language! Rene did some quick fixes for the documentation and now we are 100% up to date with it!

Thanks to all involved in the last nearly 5 years to make this happen. It had been a long ride but some of the backbones in the project kept up and now we are here!

Rene started translating some articles, and I am slowly progressing through the FAQ (another huge beast); We hope that volunteers keep popping up, and where possible stay for a longer time to help us translate the rest of the documentation base that comes in handy! This is a terrific way to start 2009!

The project is doing rather well recently. Mostly that is because Rene had done a lot of work (and Wouter also started joining us) on translating and updating the current versions. I am running a little behind on his updates because of busy days, which seems to happen more often. So I decided to take the opportunity and request a commit bit for Rene. The Documentation team reported that they had received the request so far, but no progress had been yet there. Hopefully they will agree with the bit so that I have a bit more time and options to work on different things.

Recently I had started the translation of the FAQ, which is currently progressing well. Initially I will do a rough translation and finalize the bits later on. I already got some positive feedback from Ed Schouten (A friend and fellow FreeBSD Developer) which I incorporated. The FAQ had become worthwhile to translate thanks to the efforts of Gabor Pali, thanks for that mate!.

Rene Ladan just finished the last part of the mail chapter. It’s ready for Reviewal. Rink Springer offered to have a look where possible in the near future, so with a bit of luck we can add the chapter to the official FreeBSD build soon. Thanks Rene for doing such a great job all the time (Where others did much and left, you are still here!).

Ofcourse, I am trying to keep the documentation as up to date as possible, which goes by flows. If you have more time then me and think you can contribute, please contact me, we can really use the help to get a full blown handbook translation, and possibly even translated webpages at some point.

So i did some minor changes to the layout. I added the option "vote", so that i can see what you like or what you do not like. This gives perhaps more inside information on what i should improve, and what i should not touch anymore.

Ofcourse you can always contact us using the contact form or by entering something on the guestbook.

And there was another change, i added the menu entry "FreeBSD Handboek" which is the dutch handboek wrapped into Evilcoder.org (instead of the dedicated pages that are also on this host). I think that people are now quicker in finding the handboek if they need to then before. Since that was far away hidden into the FreeBSD doc section, which is renamed to FreeBSD doc NL (refering to the translation team).

Last weekend was a productive weekend. Not only did we do some minor improvements on the hosts that serve this webserver park, but also did we succeed in updating a hell lot of documentation for freebsd-doc-nl. You can view the status at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/nl/books/handbook and see the latest revision.

We updated some chapters like the following:

Basics from 1.126 to 1.127
Serialcomms placeholder update
the mailing-list entity got upgraded
Config from 1.143 -> 1.191 (huge upgrade)
Desktop from 1.38 -> 1.45 (rather big upgrade as well)
L10N upgrade from 1.103 -> 1.105

Apart from that we have some docs done:

Security is done
Firewalls is done
Network-servers is done

And finally some newly imported docs:

Bibliography based on 1.73
Linuxemu based on 1.116
Mirrors based on 1.368

Again i would like to thank my translation team and my mentor Simon for coaching me (and kicking my ass when i make a mistake ! ).

If you want to help out, please contact me first via the contact
form, please tell me what chapter you would like to translate (or if
you just want to check the stuff that’s also fine) and what version you
would like to use. I will check whether that builds and give you
permission to start the chapter. Note that perhaps others asked the
same question, in that angle i will be very hard: First come, First
Serve. So it’s wise to include 2 chapters, your primairy one which you
would happily translate and a secondairy one in case someone obtained
it already.

When the approval came for the chapter / article / part you want to translate. You will be asked what address needs to be included on our freebsd-doc-nl mailinglist. In that way you can keep track with the projects internals and read frequent updates.

And all the hard work of me and my team is going to pay off. The FreeBSD Documentation team (Josef El-Rayes) helped me import the documentation in the official FreeBSD CVS tree. This means that all reviewed documents (by me and my team) are being inserted in the FreeBSD CVS tree after they are checked by Josef. If you would like to see more chapters available, please send me a mail and help the Dutch team!
