Sure, but there is one problem. Linking to a printed glossy magazine is still a bit difficult. Ofcourse I have the PDF but I am not sure whether I am allowed to place that online.

Thanks,
Remko

Excellent.
I think It's better to make a link to your previous article too.
Thanks

I came across something like you mention Jeff:

www.evilcoder.org was upgraded to releng_8 a few days ago, and the machine hosting it, stopped working. With a remote console I could at least see the prompt: it mentions that my gmirror partitions where unavailable and that I could boot of 'ad4a and 'ad6a', I would have expected 'ad4s1a and ad6s1a' because I partioned the disk as hinted.

After talking with Pawel (pjd) Dawidek he hinted me to load GEOM_BSD, GEOM_MBR in the kernel, after which my system booted again.

As long as I mention these things in my kernel config my system is fine, if these options are removed, I am screwed ;-)

Thanks for commenting Jeff! (and the rest as well ofcourse, I'll try to add a freebsd-update section soon[tm])

One, maybe two, instances of "not enough /dev entries per disk"
in v8 vs v7 (maybe) fixed by:
.......
Esc to loader prompt
load /boot/kernel/geom_bsd.ko
load /boot/kernel/geom_label.ko
load /boot/kernel/geom_mbr.ko
boot
.......
at least *here* and one other machine (a forum thread). If I had
known about how to do the above, I might have been able to
install a v8 aug 2009 snapshot to a sata-on-pci (from a live cd).
I've added those to /boot/loader.conf
Barring it is unique to this machine, maybe someone could fix
it by v9 so fewer problems for installs/upgrades...
........
Hopefully someone will know more and post about it.

Great article, the list of new features really clarifies things. However you fail to mention the easiest way to upgrade, freebsd-upgrade. This command makes the upgrade from 7.2 fast and painless.

Nice review, thnx for the detailed information about the new features. I really **really** wanted the new USB code, as I had a lot of problems in the past with USB harddrives.

Right now I'm upgrading 2 servers from 8.0-PRERELEASE, to 8.0-STABLE and next I'll have to upgrade some more boxes from 6-STABLE and 7-STABLE too.
