The honeynet released a paper recently (17th of december 2004) which shows the expected lifetime of a Unix machine and then especially Linux machine's. The document also talks a bit about the expected lifetime of Windows servers which should be measured in hours instead of months.

The document is worthwhile reading of you do some administration of whatever product.

Today i noticed that Zafi.D wonders around again. The worm reached a number three in my top ranking the first time it hit (see my virus stats), and now it’s a good candidate to reach number two or even reach number one.

Please update your virusscanners if you didn’t do so already!

The Evilcoder.org team wants to wish you, the reader of this site a pleasant Christmas and a happy new year.

The last year a lot happened, we moved our website to Mambo, migrated to a other webserver, updated various environmental packages. Start the FreeBSD-DOC-NL team with great achievements so far.

Also a lot had happened in my personal environment.

In the beginning of this year i got ill, the stress and emotional happenings in my life became to much.
I went to court to obtain the right to see my little son Luca. And i got the right in April of this year. Shortly after that i was able to see my little kid again after almost a year. A very pleasant happening.
But ofcourse some people did not agree and worked towards a new court, the court stated the second time that i had no more right to see my little kid. This shortly after i was ‘better’ again.
It struck like lightning, i had never see this coming and still it happened.
I still think a lot about my little kid Luca. I write him letters from time to time which i will safeguard for him until he will be able to read them on his own, without his mother and without his grandparents (the parents of his mother). And then i will have more gifts for him since i buy a gift from time to time ;).

But not only did Luca cross my mind (and thus the site) a lot, eventhough i was thinking most about him, more then anything else this year, also other stuff happened.

I obtained a car, i visited Germany for my work (and had a conference there), met some new people which i like very much. I was included in the FreeBSD documentation team (working on the Dutch Documentation Project).  And i learned a lot, more then anyone can describe.

You were all able to follow these details since a lot of what happened was also posted in my Weblog (which handles a great part of this site :-)).

I am sure the next year will be a thrilling year again, having a lot of updates on the site (not only weblog but also technical details etc), going to meet some difficulties again, and also going to meet more new people, working on improving my skills, improve on working on documents for the entire IT community etc.

As people might noticed or not there was a major outage last night for the webserver of "TheThreeMusketiers.org".

We do not know exactly what happened but the machine crashed a couple of times, therefor i went to the facility where the machine lives and did an upgrade to the latest FreeBSD version (5.3-p2) which made the machine stable again.

I have to say that the machine performs better now with the latest update so we are very pleased. For more information i will redirect you to a new upcoming "network information" section in thethreemusketiers.org domain (noc pages).

Last weekend was a productive weekend. Not only did we do some minor improvements on the hosts that serve this webserver park, but also did we succeed in updating a hell lot of documentation for freebsd-doc-nl. You can view the status at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/nl/books/handbook and see the latest revision.

We updated some chapters like the following:

Basics from 1.126 to 1.127
Serialcomms placeholder update
the mailing-list entity got upgraded
Config from 1.143 -> 1.191 (huge upgrade)
Desktop from 1.38 -> 1.45 (rather big upgrade as well)
L10N upgrade from 1.103 -> 1.105

Apart from that we have some docs done:

Security is done
Firewalls is done
Network-servers is done

And finally some newly imported docs:

Bibliography based on 1.73
Linuxemu based on 1.116
Mirrors based on 1.368

Again i would like to thank my translation team and my mentor Simon for coaching me (and kicking my ass when i make a mistake ! :-)).

On Thursday i was on the recording of Raymann is laat. I have to say that is’s a special thing to see. I had never been into a recording before and it was great. So if you are able you have to go someday.

And ofcourse yesterday we watched the show with all of us (my dad, mum, brother, Lauren and myself) and we saw me (well only a piece of my head). That was funny to see since i didn’t actually see the camera’s.
